A1 to C2 language levels – what are they?
If you want to enroll in a foreign language course, what do the marks for language levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2 mean? Are you interested in what you will learn at a particular level? Although every language is different, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) offers us an answer to that question, and in this article, we provide an overview of language competencies at levels from A1 to C2.
# Beginners – A1 and A2
✔️ A1 level has two sub-levels A1.1 and A1.2
✔️ A2 level has two sub-levels A2.1 and A2.2
After completing the A1 course, you will understand and use simple vocabulary related to your immediate environment. You will be able to describe where you live and the people you know using simple language structures and read elementary texts. These are, for example, short articles, weather forecasts, advertisements, posters, catalogs, and the like. Ordering a meal in a restaurant won’t be a problem. You will be able to search for and provide information about arriving at a certain location, making an appointment for a doctor’s appointment. It will be easy for you to fill out a form with your personal information or write a postcard.
In the A2 language level course, you will repeat and expand the acquired knowledge from the A1 level and adopt new language structures. At the end of the course, you will be able to describe your family and other people and your living conditions. You will be able to present your education and your current or previous workplace. You will be able to write email messages successfully; for example, to request information about accommodation or book it, and you will know how to write a simple personal letter, for example, a letter of thanks. Without hesitation, you will be able to exchange information on familiar topics and activities with a foreign speaker and find specific information in everyday written materials (advertisements, prospectuses, menus, train schedules, etc.).
# Individual users – B level
✔️ B1 level has four sub-levels B1.1, B1.2, B1.3 and B1.4
✔️ B2 level has two sub-levels B2.1 and B2.2
Courses at the B1 level will enable you to understand the main ideas of standard conversation related to work, school, leisure, and the like, as well as television and radio programs about current events or topics of your personal and professional interest. You will understand texts written in ordinary language or the language of your profession, and you will easily find important information in them. You will also be able to write a review or your opinion on a wider range of topics. You will easily communicate with native or other foreign speakers in most situations that may arise when traveling in an area where that language is spoken or moving to a foreign country. You will be able to engage in a conversation about familiar or everyday topics (e.g., family, work, travel, and current affairs). You will easily explain your views and plans and tell a story, retell the content of a book or movie, and describe your reactions.
After courses at the B2 level, you will communicate fluently and spontaneously and maintain interaction with a native speaker. You will be able to actively participate in discussions within familiar situations, explain and defend your points of view, read articles and reports dealing with contemporary problems, and understand contemporary literary prose. You will also acquire the skills of writing an essay or report, conveying information, or giving reasons for or against a certain point of view, as well as other types of texts.
# Highest language levels – Advanced users
✔️ C1 level has four sub-levels C1.1, C1.2, C1.3 and C1.4
✔️ C2 level has two sub-levels C2.1 i C2.2
Courses at the C1 level will transform you from an independent to an experienced user of the language. You will express yourself fluently and spontaneously without having to search for the right words. You will use language flexibly and effectively in social and business situations and express your ideas and opinions precisely. You can write about complex topics, emphasizing what is important, and using a style that suits the intended reader. You will understand long and complex factual and literary texts. You will read specialized articles and longer technical instructions, even when they are not related to your field.
Speakers of a foreign language at the C2 level easily understand everything they hear or read. They can summarize information from different spoken or written sources. They can reconstruct arguments and different views on any topic in a coherent way. They express themselves spontaneously, very fluently, and precisely, distinguishing finer nuances of meaning, even in the most complex linguistic situations.
